Newcomer’s Guide

Employment

  • Newcomers Guide
  • Employment

If you want to work in Quebec, it can be difficult to find employment if you do not speak at least some French (see our section on immigration for further information, and on how to access French language courses).

Social Insurance Number (SIN)

If you want to work in Canada, you need a social insurance number. You can get an application form at any post office or a Canada Employment Centre. You are encouraged to apply in person at your nearest Service Canada centre.

Employment Insurance (EI)

If you have lost your job and have worked for a certain number of weeks, you may be able to get EI benefits. Regular benefits are paid to those who have lost their jobs and want to return to work. Special EI benefits are also paid to people who are unable to work due to illness, injury, quarantine, pregnancy, or because they are caring for a baby or adopted child (in Quebec, the QPIP provides parental benefits; see our section on income and pension). For more details, call 1 800 206-7218 or visit the Service Canada website.
